Global Data Source Definitions for Jenkins (soatestcli)

Hi,

how can I import a data source (data group with several excels) defined as 'Global Data Sources' when starting SOAtest from the cli?

I was unable to find anything in the localsettings.
is there a way to do this?
maybe something similiar to the activeDataSource.xml?

and by creating a new workspace via cli are initially nowhere defined?

I do have the globaldatasources.property file.

the question would be how to pass this into the workspace, so we can then use the xml above to select the currently active one...

Yes, this is global data sources. By creating a new workspace you don't have it ( I mean you don't have any data source defined in the workspace).
Global and project level data sources can be reused and shared outside of a single SOAtest project file. They are persisted in properties files that can be checked in/out of source control (if source control is used) for sharing. Global data sources are persisted in a separate properties file that you can define in the preferences panel (under Preferences> Parasoft> Global Data Sources). Project level data sources are persisted in the .parasoft file in the Eclipse project directory.
A test suite that references a global data source can be remedied by copying and pasting the global data source into the root test suite of the SOAtest project.

If you are doing load testing, note that global data sources are not currently supported in Load Test.

datasources.global.location=[local|$PATH_TO_DIR_WITH_datasources.properties_file]

my localsettings.properties file:

Backslash is a special character in java property files. It is used to escape other characters. If you need a literal backslash then you need to escape it with another backslash. I see single backslashes in the various parts of your localsettings property file. So, the paths in your java properties file are not correct. This is what Irek was referring to earlier.

you can use local setting properties to define a global data source
datasources.global.location=[local|$PATH_TO_DIR_WITH_datasources.properties_file]

I'm having trouble finding documentation for this. However, I've had success with something like the following:

datasources.global.file=replace_me_with_path_to_dir_having_datasources_dot_properties_file
datasources.global.location=shared

I think datasources.properties is correct. Please verify you have the correct location and your tests are configured to use the data source described there.

yes, I made a typo.
@benken_parasoft is right you should use:

datasources.global.file= path_to_dir
datasources.global.location=shared

Somehow during copy&past, I lost the first property.

You can, however, get those option directly from SOAtest GUI:
create workspace

• go to Parasoft>Preferences> Global Data Sources
• select "Shared File" and provide directory location
• go back to workspace and configure required datasources
• go back to Parasoft and select option share (select global data sources)

It will create for you part of localsettings file

but I had to delete the global data sources yesterday as the .tst files opened really slowly with so many (72!) excel data sources configured as global.
is that your experience as well?

that was the reason why I changed from having one tst file with all regression data sources to many tst files with single excels defined in each.

if I make a step backwards with globals i might not change the current setup.

but i intend to complete this test with globals this sprint to document the setup in our confluence how-to pages for SOAtest. maybe another project can use it.

.tst files opened really slowly with so many (72!) excel data sources configured as global.

Do all your tst files use all 72 Excel files? If not, then this may not be a good approach. All 72 Excel files would be getting loaded into memory all at once. This takes time and may consume a lot of memory, negatively affecting performance.

Additionally, some actions in SOAtest can trigger datasources to be refreshed (reloaded all over again) to make sure the column data in memory is current. SOAtest may do this after opening a tst or just prior to executing a test suite.

If let's say you now have 72 tst files where each one really only uses one of the 72 Excel files then you should probably define a separate Excel data source in each tst instead of defining all data sources globally.

However, global test data management does have benefits. As mentioned, Parasoft's Data Repository server is intended for this combined with Parasoft's new Test Data Assistant (TDA) which " enables you to manage all of the Parasoft data repositories your team or organization uses for testing and service virtualization". I highly recommend checking out TDA!

thank you for that explanation.
That's about what I had figured and sort of "proven by experience" by separating them into tst to excel pairs.

but as you pointed out, changing to data repository instead of excels will be our next iteration.
it will also save us tons of space on git, we now waste due to the excels being binary data.
